Day 2-Central London

When you think of vacation you might think of relaxing and sleeping in. Well let me tell you today were just the opposite. We had a fun filled day with lots to do!

We woke up at about 8’o clock and went down stairs to a nice breakfast. Now, breakfast here is a little bit different than what we’re used to. Some of the dishes include baked beans and stewed tomatoes, we also had sausage similar to the ones that we have, except here they are about the size of a bratwurst. They also had regular cereal.
Next we went on another London walk. We got to see Big Ben, Parliament, West Minster Abbey, West Minster boy’s school, the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and St. James Park.

Unfortunately you’d have to be here to truly get the idea just how big and beautiful these things are, but here are some pictures so you get the idea.

We went inside of West Minster Abbey for a guided tour. This Abbey (or church) is literally like 1000 years old. It’s massive, and we got to see many tombs of past royalty (and many other famous people). In fact in this church alone there are over 3000 tombs!
After that we went to Trafalger Square and climbed on the big lions standing guard there.

We went to the National Gallery art museum and had some dinner there. The food was excellent and we got to try very English things like Sheppard’s pie, Trickle tart and raisin scones with clotted cream. We then parted ways and some of use (including Christian) went to see the Les Miserable’s musical while the others went shopping (including Grace). Les Mis was the bomb, and we had a great time seeing the official version of it in London’s theater district.

Well all good things must come to an end sometime, but we had a great day. Right now we’re going to sleep hope to hear comments from you! Nighty-Night.

Christian,
I am really impressed with all the things you guys have crammed into one day...lots of dead people and old buildings. LOL

When you see other boys about your age do they dress like you? How do they seem different or the same to you?

By the way, I really liked that feature you put on the left hand side that helps us understand the differences between our countries. But tell me, do you think the Penguins in Madagascar were British because at the end of the movie they said, "Just smile and wave...just smile and wave ON!"?

Love,
Grandpa Foster

I'm thoroughly enjoying the trip through your "eyes" via photos and words! What a great life experience for you, Christian, and your family! Keep the notes and pictures coming...I can pretend I'm there during winter break! Here's an Language Arts question...words used there are different, how about dialect?

Looks like your family is having a great time. I liked the picture of the tube. When I go to Boston to visit my daughter we always use the MBTA so it was interesting to see the differences.

It sounds like you enjoyed Les Mis, my favorite play. Did they sing in English accents?

I noticed the money in one picture. I have always wondered what a shilling is. What coins are in the picture? What is the conversion rate for the pound compared to the dollar? Do they have crowns too?

Enjoy your trip Christian!

while you guys were galavanting around in London, Ben and I were staying at the luxurious Rosemary Motel at I-173 and I-41 in beautiful Antioch, IL The beds were "firm" to say the least. The heater worked and there were no bugs. OK, we admit it, Antioch is no match for London!! You're better than us and we're jealous. We love and miss you guys.
