Day 3-Windsor Castle

Well, today was another fun and busy day! We were leaving for a day trip to Windsor and has a train to catch first thing this morning. The breakfast room at our hotel had a wait to eat so we had cereal and juice on the train out of London instead.

We arrived in Windsor at about 10:30am and got to watch the changing of the guard on the grounds of Windsor Castle as soon as we arrived. We got a lot closer up view than we did at Buckingham Palace yesterday so that was fun. After the ceremony we met up with the tour guide we had hired to take us through the castle.
We learned all about the history of the castle, that it was built in 1066 by William the Conqueror and how and why it was built and a bunch of other stuff about it. We got to see about 20 rooms in the castle.

My favorite was the “Cavalry Room”. It had hundreds of weapons and suits of armor. My sister Grace loved the room with Queen Mary’s doll house. Everything in the doll house is 1/12th scale and actually works. Also, everything in it was made by real artists and furniture makers and even miniature books written by real authors from that time in history. At one end of the castle is St. George’s church and we toured that too. We looked at the tombs of past royalty including King Henry the Eighth. We also learned about the Knights of the Garter which the highest honor anyone in England can get from the Queen and there are only 24 of them. This was a long tour but very cool! Then we went out for dinner with the tour guide in the old Windsor train station that has been made into shops and restaurants. The food was great and I was starving after that long tour!

We took the train back to London for another musical tonight. This time it was Sound of Music. It was more lighthearted than Les Mis last night. It was brilliant, as the Brits would say.

We just came back to the inn for a snack and now bed. Leave us comments if you get a chance. I added some new stuff to my sidebar lists so don’t forget to check those out too. That’s all for now.

Christian & Grace,

What a wonderful day. When Grandma and I were in England, Windsor Castle was one of our favorite places. So much history and beauty. And to think it's still the Summer residence of the Royal Family today.

We can't wait to hear what's next. Tell Mom, the Aunts and Cousins we said hi.

Cheerio for now.

Christian and Grace,
I had no idea that Windsor castle was begun by William the Conqueror in 1066. Think of that, almost 1,000 years ago!

At the pace you folks are moving you are going to need a vacation from your vacation. BTW I noticed that they use the term bubbler for drinking fountain and I always thought that was a term used in Milwaukee where I grew up. I guess it was just that "bubbler" was the name that my mother gave to it because she was from England. Very interesting.

Keep up the good work and the interesting facts.

Love,
Grandpa Foster

We just got back from Big Boy's with Jake and Carson, where we enjoyed the wonderful American dishes of spagetti, hamburgers, a hot dog, fries & onion rings. Aren't you impressed? Not quite as fancy as you're having, huh? For entertainment, we watched the beautiful love story of Shrek II in honor of Valentine's Day. Whoo-hoo!
Your pictures really make us feel like we are there with you. The picture in the flower shop is really nice, and of course all the outdoor shots. I bet Sound of Music was fun! Such a beautiful (and true) story!
Enjoy exploring your English heritage a bit more & tell us all about it! Love, Grandma xxxxxxx
